GLIDE is a collaboration between the Johns Hopkins Berman Institute of Bioethics, the Ethox Centre at the University of Oxford, and a network of partners centres from around the world, focusing on global health ethics.

Bringing together scholars, trainees and partners from across the network, GLIDE undertakes both responsive research on pressing issues in infectious disease ethics and forward-looking projects with longer timeframes.

Close collaboration between our partners and scientists at Oxford, Johns Hopkins and partner institutions is key to our success in identifying and responding to emerging global health ethical issues. These connections are fostered through regular problem-based ethics forums bringing together:

  • scientists
  • ethicists
  • humanities scholars
  • policy makers, and
  • health professionals.

The forums provide timely ethics support to those facing ethical issues and generate ideas for research projects, policy initiatives, and conferences.

GLIDE’s researcher exchange programme enables faculty staff and trainees at Oxford and Johns Hopkins to spend time at the partner institution to facilitate and support collaborative projects. The exchange programme complements and interacts with our ethics forum. The GLIDE Visiting Scholarship Scheme provides additional opportunities for exchange and cooperation with public health experts, infectious disease physicians and researchers, bioethicists, and policy makers from around the globe, with emphasis on LMICs, to spend time in Oxford and Baltimore.

GLIDE has close collaborative links with a number of international initiatives with a focus on infectious disease ethics. These include the Global Health Bioethics Network, the Fogarty African Bioethics Training Programme and the Pandemic Sciences Institute.
